Use a Top Strength to Put Yourself in Flow

Use one of your top strengths in a way that may put you into the experience of flow that was described in Chapter 2, when we covered the element of Engagement in Martin Seligman’s PERMA theory of well-being. Try to do something that might put you into a flow state in a new and different way than what you may have experienced in the past.

Like all of the VIA strengths, just as we may sometimes not use them enough, there are others times when we may use them too much. Perseverance is one of those strengths where the wisdom to know the difference when to keep going and when to stop trying may be especially important.

If you need help coming up with ideas, you can review the 340 Ways to Use Character Strengths that we gave you the link for at the end of Chapter 8. You can also easily ‘google’ it by just entering the title. It might also be useful for you to review the list of Pleasant Activities for ideas of different things that you might want to do. After you have tried to use on of your top strengths to experience flow, answer the questions below.
